Welcome to Bankland

At 1880 Broadway—near where Alexandra works—developers are hard at work installing 85,000 square feet of retail space in what used to be a vacant lot behind the Mayflower Hotel. The complex is supposed to open in December. For now, the construction site is decorated with one of those trompe l’oeil murals of shoppers scurrying from store to store. Some clever vandal, however, has added an interpretation of what more retail space really means. It means more fucking banks—and the imaginary shoppers couldn’t be happier.
